Things to see:
Iao Valley, Kahului - A taste of the rain forest without driving to Hana
Hana - The adventure is the journey, allow all day. Winding road through the rain forest with abundant water falls and natural pools. Pick up the Hana tape guide at Paia. It's very nice to stay overnight and take a hike.
Haleakala - The dormant volcano is a national park at the peak. Winding drive to the crater with many things to see. If you go for sunrise, it is very cold and windy so bring a jacket!
Back road to Wailuku - If you go north towards Kapalua, the road continues all the way to Wailuku. If is very narrow in places but paved all the way. Pretty drive but only for the adventurous drivers!
Makena (big beach) - On Piilani highway past Makena. Beautiful sandy beach well past the resort areas. No facilities so bring lunch and water. Watch out for rip tides and shore break.
Kapalua Beach - Very pretty cove at Kapalua, tends to be crowded mid-day, small waves with safe swimming and great snorkeling. Off Honoapiilani highway in Kapalua.
Hamoa Beach - Nice place to go if you stay over night in Hana - east of Hana, take Haneoo Road off Hana Highway.
Things to do:
Hiking - there are diverse hiking opportunities from the rain forest to volcanic rock. If you are interested pick up the book Hiking Maui.
Bicycling - Many companies rent bicycles. A favorite ride is a downhill morning trip down Haleakela. There are businesses that specialize in this - look at the tourist brochures.
Swimming - The three pools in Puamana (especially the ocean front one!) are very nice but there are other options. In addition to the ocean beaches there are fresh water pools along the Hana highway.
Boat rides - If you are here during whale season (winter) be sure to take a whale watch trip. There are many different tours that leave from Lahaina harbor.
Sunset sails are romantic - we recommend the Scotch Mist out of Lahaina harbor.
Ferry boats leave for Lanai (the island) and Molokai from Lahaina harbor. There are overnight and golf packages.
Snorkeling: There are many spots to snorkel. Boss Frogs in Lahaina has inexpensive snorkel rentals and snorkel boat trips.
Favorite snorkeling spots:
Black Rock at Kaanapali (near the Sheraton) - easy snorkeling with a point to snorkel around. Water is deep as you swim out, safe surf, windy in the afternoon.
Honolua Bay - ONLY FOR STRONG SWIMMERS - excellent snorkeling if conditions are ok. Do Not go out if waves are up or water is running into the bay from the stream. No facilities. Honolua bay is off Honoapiilani highway past kapalua. Get a guide book for directions.
Ulua beach - Wailea - excellent snorkeling, nice crescent beach with facilities - S. Kehei Road to Alanui Road south of Wailea
Kahekili park - Shallow reef just off shore - just north of Kaanapali off Honoapiilani highway.
Puamana:
Check in at the office on your first day - you need a car sticker.
There are three swimming pools - try them all!
Tennis court must be reserved at the office.
If mangoes are ripe, there are poles for picking them at the office.
There is usually a small sandy beach at the coast, but it moves around. When you wade out, be careful of rocks. The waves are generally safe, but common sense should be used, especially with children. If you go in north of the pool, beware of urchins - their sharp spines can stab you in the foot.
All lawn areas are common space for everyone to enjoy, but please respect other's privacy!
